Ultimate Spinach - Your Head is Reeling
"Collapsed laughter running falling tripping across the minefields of your thoughts dissolved wondering who am I why should I be alone alone?"
Pretentious hippy dribble? Yep. Do I still love it? Hell Yeah!
Ultimate Spinach were part of a manufactured scene of psychedelic bands to come out of Boston in the late 60's. This heavily marketed movement, crafted by producer Alan Lorber was dubbed the 'Bosstown Sound' but never had the impact intended. Though they mightn't have been as authentic as their Californian counterparts, Ultimate Spinach still made some great tunes, like today's selection from their 1967 self-titled debut LP. 'Your Head Is Reeling ' begins with group leader and songwriter, Ian Bruce-Douglas, reading the previously mentioned poetic musings over the ever trippy strum of a sitar. The drums start in a familiar sounding marching beat and then settle into a regular pattern as the song forms. Bruce-Douglas continues to preach righteous rhetoric until the chorus, which consists of a woman in an apparent trance repeatedly singing the song title. Bruce-Douglas plays a Doors-esque electric organ solo, and waves of fuzzy guitar permeate throughout. The result is a slice of sike perfect for next time you light some candles, burn some incense and hold a be-in.
